Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
