Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
