The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
