The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
