Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
