Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his intentions for a lavish reception room twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you ought to provide the person your additional clothing also.
The apparent and clear truth that the Savior from scripture requests a form of radical love focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. A Conflict for the Best Within Us
So I have been inspired to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects of American history.
